Tyrell M. Holcomb

Youth Mayor of the District of Columbia

 

Tyrell Marquis Holcomb is a 16-year old native Washingtonian. He is an 11th grader in the Business and Finance Academy at H.D. Woodson Senior High School. He is a graduate of Thomas Elementary School and Hine Junior High School. Upon graduation Tyrell plans to pursue degrees in Business, Theology and Law. His career goal is to become political leader and a Minister.

 

Tyrell is a third year Delta level participant in the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute, a four- year leadership and development program for youth in the District of Columbia. Tyrell’s peers in the Institute elected him Youth Mayor in August of 2004. As Youth Mayor Tyrell serves as the leader of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute and also serves as an advocate for youth in the District of Columbia. He also has the opportunity to work directly with Mayor Anthony A. Williams and other government officials.  

 

His hobbies and interests include sports, traveling, computers, reading, singing, politics, law and spiritual development.  

 

He is a member of the Holy Christian Missionary Baptist Church for all People, where Reverend Stephen E. Young serves as Pastor.  At Holy Christian Missionary Baptist Church Tyrell serves as a Youth Minister, Youth Bible Study Teacher, Choir member and as a member of the Youth Praise Team.

 

His community activities include being a member of Peace in the Streets, The YMCA Youth in Government Program and a volunteer at the Pilgrim Rest Community Center and the Kenilworth Recreation Center.

 

Tyrell is a Ward 7 resident and is the son of Ms. Lynette Holcomb and has 4 brothers and 3 sisters. His major goals as Youth Mayor are to be a catalyst for getting youth involved in their communities and civic activities and to help come up with ideas to decrease youth violence and crime.

 

Tyrell’s motto in life is “Don’t sit and wait for change, but take the initiative to make a difference.”
