Background

On Saturday, November 13, 1999 we were able to host our 1st Annual Youth Conference (Youth Summit '99 - Preparing to Rule: Leaders of the New Millennium) at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, Maryland.

The event was a success, drawing distinguished guests from the Maryland State Election Board, Howard University, Black Entertainment Television (BET), New York City, and various youth groups in the region (go to Youth Summit '99 Photogallery). Workshops and panels involved local celebrities and intriguing discussion with the young participants. The day concluded with a talent show featuring African dance, hip-hop, drama, and poetry.

In November of 2000, we held our Second Annual Youth & College Leadership Summit 2000 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Students, youth leaders, and youth advisors from around the country participated in this event. Congressman Elijah Cummings was among the many inspirational speakers at this two-day conference.

Our most inspiring conference to date was from November 30 - December 2, 2002. Young leaders from around the nation and globe participated in this 3-day conference. Author & activist Kevin Powell was the keynote speaker and participants enjoyed intensive leadership training workshops. Click here to see our post-conference initiatives.

These 3 events have placed us in a position to build our coalition to be a stronger force for young people. In the future years, we plan to continue hosting our annual conference. In addition, we will be launching various Youth Leadership Development Programs that include building a comprehensive youth leadership development curriculum.
